The influenza vaccine, or flu shot, has a lot of myths surrounding it. Many people are too scared to get the shot or are convinced it doesn't work. Doctors urge everyone to get the shot each year because the flu can make you very sick and in some cases be fatal. We're here to debunk the myths regarding the flu shot and help you feel more comfortable about getting the shot.
Myth 1: I've never had influenza, so I don't need to get the shot.
Fact: The flu can be very mild or serious depending on the person. People ages 65 and older are more at risk for serious complications from the flu like pnuemonia. Just because you've never gotten the flu before, doesn't mean you won't get it this year.
Myth 2: The flu shot gives you the actual flu.
Fact: You may experience mild symptoms like a fever or body aches the first day after your flu shot, but the vaccine contains weakened flu viruses that your body is able to fight off.
Myth 3: The vaccine doesn't work because I still got the flu.
Fact: Unfortunately, you can still get the flu even if you got the flu shot, but it does lessen your chances of getting it. There are different strains of the flu each year, and the vaccine only covers certain strains, which is why you can still get another strain of the flu after receiving the shot.
All in all, the flu shot is safe for everyone unless advised otherwise by your doctor. If you have concerns about getting the flu shot, speak to your primary care doctor so they can talk it through with you.
