Pap smears and cervical cancer screenings are outpatient procedures that diagnose cervical cancer when it’s easiest to treat.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) encourages all women ages 21 and older to undergo a Pap smear every three years. After age 65, most women can stop having cervical cancer screenings.
The LaSante Health Center team offers two types of cervical cancer screenings:
During a Pap smear, your LaSante Health Center provider collects a sample of cells from your cervix. Then, they send your sample to a laboratory where your cells are viewed under a microscope to check for abnormalities.
An HPV test is similar to a Pap smear. During the procedure, your provider uses a small spatula or brush (called a sampler) to collect cervical cells. The cells are then sent to a lab for testing.
The LaSante Health Center team often completes Pap smears and HPV testing together.
Preparing for a Pap smear or cervical cancer screening is easy. There are only two requirements. First, avoid sexual intercourse or douching for at least 48 hours before your cervical cancer screening.
Second, schedule the test for a time when you aren’t having your period.
Pap smears and cervical cancer screenings typically take 10 minutes or less. During both procedures, mild pressure and a scraping sensation are normal. Your LaSante Health Center provider is careful to ensure the process is comfortable and pain-free.
If your Pap smear or cervical cancer screening result is positive, it doesn’t mean you have cervical cancer. Instead, it indicates you have abnormal cervical cells that could potentially cause cancer in the future.
Your LaSante Health Center provider might recommend additional testing depending on the type and amount of abnormal cervical cells. For example, they could recommend a colposcopy or a biopsy.
A colposcopy lets your provider examine your vaginal, vulvar, and cervical tissues under a microscope, while a biopsy collects a small sample of cervical tissue for additional analysis.
