What is a routine gynecological exam?

A gynecological or pelvic exam assesses the health and function of your reproductive organs.

This exam is often part of a well-woman checkup. However, your LaSante Health Center provider might also recommend one if you’re experiencing abnormal symptoms like vaginal discharge, pelvic pain, or spotting.

Why are routine gynecological exams done?

The LaSante Health Center team uses routine gynecological exams to:

Check your sexual and reproductive health

Gynecological exams are typically included in your annual physical. Since your reproductive organs contribute so much to your general well-being, they must function optimally. 

For example, your LaSante Health Center provider might recommend a gynecological exam if you want to get pregnant. Checking your vulva, vagina, cervix, ovaries, and uterus can identify issues that might cause pregnancy complications later on.

Diagnose medical conditions

The LaSante Health Center team also uses gynecological exams to diagnose and treat certain medical conditions. Your provider might recommend one if you’re experiencing unusual vaginal bleeding, painful sex, or urinary problems.

Following your gynecological exam, your provider makes personalized treatment recommendations.

What happens during a routine gynecological exam?

A routine gynecological exam only takes a few minutes.

You change into a gown and lie down on your back on an exam table with your knees bent. Once you’re comfortable, your LaSante Health Center provider asks you to slide your body toward the end of the table and open your legs.

Your gynecological exam includes several parts, including:

External visual exam

First, your provider observes your vulva (the external portion of your vagina), checking for skin discoloration, swelling, and other abnormalities. 

Internal visual exam

Next, your provider examines your cervix and the inside of your vagina. Once again, they check for abnormalities that might indicate a medical concern.

Physical exam

Your LaSante Health Center provider puts on a pair of medical gloves and inserts two fingers into your vagina. At the same time, they use their other hand to gently press on your lower belly. That lets them check the shape and size of your uterus and ovaries.

At the end of your gynecological exam, you change back into your clothes. You can ask questions and discuss any concerns you have at this time.
